Helpful Tips to Save Your Child's Vision September 20, 2018 09:45

Every year, millions of children around the world get into accidents while playing at home or even at school that damages their eyes. In fact, vision problems are one of the top causes of interfering with child growth at an early age, and yet most children under 5 years old have not undergone any eye examination at all.

When it comes to keeping your child healthy, most know how important it is to visit the pediatrician for annual check-ups. But what most parents aren’t aware of is the fact that annual eye exams are equally as important as visiting the pediatrician.

When is the first eye exam needed?

Adults without vision problems can receive an eye exam and vision test every two years. However, if you are over the age of 40, whether you have any vision concern or not, an annual eye exam is a must. As for children, they should get their first eye exam at six months old. It's quite early on in life that we should begin taking care of our eyes.

Interestingly, a child’s vision during infancy is always changing and developing. In the first few months, an infant can only see black and white colors and focus on close up objects. However, their visual development sharpens at six months old. At this age children should have their eyes first examined by an eye doctor to make sure they are properly developing. Failure to get a child's eyes checked at this early age may lead to poor vision in their lifetime. By the age of 3 or 4 years old, children at their pre-kindergarten stage should get another eye exam. By this time, their eyes have basically grown and are fully developed. An annual eye exam is a must in the succeeding years along with an annual checkup to a pediatrician. A full and complete eye checkup is the best way for doctors to monitor a child’s developing young eyes.

What can be detected in an eye exam?

Early detection of eye problems and early treatment can help stop further development of bigger problems that could impair a child’s precious eyesight for life. Eye doctors can detect a common eye condition which usually develops early on in a child’s life called “lazy eye." Here, treatment makes use of a corrective eye patch on the normal eye to correct the “lazy eye." Children’s eye examinations can also detect eye problems such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism which can be easily addressed with prescription glasses.

Just like any trip to a medical center, you might be worried about kids getting scared and anxious when they get their eyes checked by an eye doctor. But don’t worry, eye exams are now made fun for kids!

Help keep your child’s eyes safe and healthy

The child’s vision is an important factor in their ability to learn academically at school, in sports, and other activities. We’ve rounded up some helpful tips to help protect your child’s vision. Here are some things you can do to maintain your child’s vision at its optimal health.

  • For healthy eyes, encourage your children to eat plenty of green leafy vegetables and vitamin-fortified milk.
  • Make sure to buy your child a pair of high-quality sunglasses with 100% UV protection to shield their eyes from the sun’s UV exposure.
  • Keep harmful substances like bugs spray, detergents, and sharp objects away from your children’s reach to avoid any accidents, including eye contact.
  • Schedule them for an eye checkup at the doctor's suggested cadence to monitor and address any eye-related problems which are mostly remedied with prescription glasses. Make sure to get the right glasses for your kids considering factors such as design, fit, and quality. Check out these cool Norman Childs Market glasses your kid might love.

  • Make sure your children are wearing the proper eyewear when playing sports. Invest in high-quality safety goggles to protect their eyes from any eye injuries especially when playing high physical sports like baseball, soccer or ice hockey.
  • Create a good study environment for your kids to prevent eye strain. Make sure you have enough and proper lighting for whenever they study, read, write, and even eat. Make use of your windows to let natural light in which is the best form of light for the eyes.
  • Strictly impose a time limit on your kids when using their mobile phones or computer. Monitor their screen time and make sure they take a 10-minute break every hour. Studies show that overdoing computer and mobile activities can cause blurry vision and focusing problems.

Spotting eye problems

Most children don’t complain when they are starting to experience trouble in seeing. And most parents often attribute certain signs and symptoms like difficulty in learning, sports, and attention problems to other causes. Although symptoms such as squinting are an obvious sign of a problem with your child’s vision, there are additional symptoms that can be spotted right away to immediately be addressed, including:

  • Poor comprehension and concentration
  • Poor and short attention span
  • Loses place and points to words when reading
  • Constant blinking and rubbing of eyes when reading
  • Problems with making homework
  • Redness of eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty reading and identifying letters and words
  • Sitting very close to the TV
  • Reading and using mobile phones very close to the eyes

It is crucial that you watch your child’s behavior and observe the above-mentioned signs. If you notice your child has any of these, see your doctor.

Glasses and Contacts

Adults, kids, and even babies can wear glasses and even contacts. Let the kids pick the design of the glasses they are confident and comfortable to wear. You can check several designs so your child can choose and pick their desired frames.

Child's Vision Alexander Daas

Norman Childs Vintage

Keep the following tips in mind when choosing glasses for your kids:

  • Let your kids choose their frames.
  • Plastic frames work best for children below 2 years old.
  • Frames with elastic strap for young kids will keep the glasses in place.
  • If you select metal frames for your kids, make sure they have durable spring hinges.
  • Choose Polycarbonate lenses for athletic kids because of the material's tough and shatterproof, yet lightweight properties.

Take extra precautions when it comes to your children's eyewear health. Don’t assume all is well until you see your kids squinting and complaining about their eyes. Save your child’s vision by scheduling your kids a yearly appointment to your eye doctor and choosing the best pair of quality eyewear for them. Vacation Tips For Good Eye Health | Sunglasses, Eyeglasses and Contacts September 18, 2018 22:26

When you're heading out on vacation, whether for summer family fun or for spring break, it's so important to keep your eye health in mind. Just like how a cap can protect your head, and applying sunscreen can help protect your skin while under the sun, your eyes need that much protection too. Let’s take a look at some vacation tips to help you maintain good eye health even while traveling so that you can enjoy every memorable moment.

Good eye health Alexander Daas

Vacation Tip #1: Remember Your Eyes When Packing

Regardless of whether you wear glasses or contacts, make sure to pack an extra pair of glasses. Spare glasses are very useful for whenever your eyes need some time to take a break from contacts or in case you lose or break your glasses. If you prefer wearing contact lenses make sure you have a backup set as it might be difficult for you to find a replacement where you’re traveling. If you’re flying on a plane pack your contact solution too as cabin pressure on airplanes cause low humidity making your eyes dry and irritated. If you are flying on a long trip, eye drops will be a savior.

Keep a copy of your prescription too with this quick tip: simply save it in your google drive or email, so even if you lose your things or you forget to bring your specs, you can easily get a new pair and continue to enjoy your vacation.

Other important things you shouldn’t forget? Bring are a great pair of sunglasses and goggles!

Choose The Right Sunglasses

Good eye health Alexander Daas

Mykita + Maison Margiela

A pair of great looking sunglasses are definitely a must-have on your packing list, because protecting your eyes from the harmful UV sun rays should be your top priority when traveling to a hot destination. The best way is by wearing a great pair of sunglasses with UV protection. Wearing a pair like the Mykita + Maison Margiela  can block 100 percent of UV rays which can be essential for good eye health.

Keep in mind, dark tinted sunglasses do not always mean they can give you the good eye health you’re aiming for while under the sun. In fact, sunglasses that do not have UV protecting capabilities can trick your eyes into thinking they are protected, making them more vulnerable to the UV rays as if you are not wearing any sunglasses at all.

Good eye health Alexander Daas

SALT Reiner

You may also want to consider getting yourself a pair of polarized sunglasses. Polarized sunglasses like SALT Reiner don't only block UV rays but they also reduce glare allowing you to enjoy yourself all the more whilst under the sun. You can easily tell if the lenses are polarized by holding them up to the sun (or any light source) then tilting them to the side. If you see the light change, then they’re most likely polarized!

Don’t Forget Goggles!

Just like the right polarized sunglasses can support good eye health, goggles are also important in protecting your eyes under the water. Make sure you choose goggles that fit you well by providing a tight seal for your eyes against chlorine and microbes present in the water. Also, don’t forget to remove your contact lenses before swimming to avoid eye infection, too.

Vacation Tip #2: Good Foods For Good Eye Health

Aside from wearing protective eyewear like goggles and sunglasses to help you protect your eyes from damage under the sun and water, you can also achieve good eye health by nourishing and strengthening your eyes with the right foods. Another vacation tip is to pack healthy snacks on your trip. A few healthy snacks you can pack for your vacation include:

  • Foods rich in Vitamin E like nuts, almonds, walnuts, and cashews can help protect your eyes from damage.
  • Citrus fruits such as lemons, grapefruits, and oranges that are high in vitamin C and antioxidant properties also play important roles in nourishing your eyes.
  • Foods like eggs that are high in lutein, Vitamins C and E, and zinc help reduce the risk of sight loss.
  • Root vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes that are rich in beta-carotene help provide good eye health when consumed regularly!

Vacation Tip #3: See Your Eye Doctor Before You Travel

So, you’ve booked a round trip plane ticket, booked hotel accommodations and you’ve already planned your itinerary.  Your vacation is all set! But the questions is, have you scheduled your eye exam? If you are used to wearing prescription eyeglasses, prescription sunglasses or contacts, you probably know that a great vacation would not be memorable if you couldn’t see clearly. A great way to prepare for your vacation is to ensure you have good eye health by making a stop at your eye doctor before taking off.

If your prescription glasses need to be replaced or if you are in need of an eye exam, schedule an appointment with your eye doctor before your vacation. Your prescription can change without any signs or without you noticing it, so it’s extremely important that you make sure your glasses are up-to-date before leaving for your trip. This will allow you to witness and see all the beautiful attractions and get the most out of the breathtaking views during your vacation with a crisp vision!

Bon Voyage!

We hope these vacation tips can help you protect your eyes and maintain good eye health even while you’re traveling. Setting aside a little time to make sure that your vision and eyewear are perfectly set and ready for your trip will allow you to have a fun-filled and worry-free vacation. How to Buy Glasses Online? We've Got Answers. September 11, 2018 16:22

The search for the perfect glasses can often be challenging with so many options and no clear direction for where to turn when it comes to quality and style.

Without having the actual sunglasses or eyeglasses in front of you, it can be difficult to determine which specific styles will best fit you.

To show you how easy and simple it is to buy glasses online, here's your complete guide to buy glasses online with confidence.

Step 1: Know your prescription and measurements

First things first: make sure that you know your accurate prescription provided by your eye care professional. Getting the right fit can be challenging, so you’ll have to make sure you have the right prescription and eyewear measurements. In case you don’t know your eyewear measurements, you can simply look at any of the temples of your existing eyeglasses or sunglasses. The measurements are listed in the order of lens width, bridge width, and arm length. Worst case scenario, grab a ruler and measure the lens width, bridge, and arm of your glasses if you don’t see any numbers listed on your current glasses.

Your measurement should most likely look like: lens width of 31-64 mm, bridge width of 9-24 mm, and arm length of 115-155 mm.

Step 2: Pick your style

In choosing which style is right for you, consider your face shape and your personal style.

What glasses styles suit your face shape?

Knowing your face shape is key to finding the right glasses that will perfectly fit you. Certain frame shapes can highlight and compliment your best features, while others may enhance the wrong attributes. But the good news is you can easily predict which frames can emphasize your best features.

Identify your face shape by looking directly in front of a mirror or taking a selfie to get a good look at all your angles. Take a closer look at the overall shape, width, length, and contours of your face. Find your match and identify which shape (heart, round, oval, or square) you resemble most. Once you have identified your face shape, it’s important to find frames that will bring balance and symmetry. Choose frames with soft edges (round or aviator sunglasses) if you have a square face shape and avoid them if you have a round face shape. On the other hand, if your face is more elongated (oblong or oval) balance it out with frames that are bigger in width than in length.

What frame designs suit my personality and style?

This usually takes most of your time as it involves your personal choice. But once you’ve identified your face shape and narrowed down what compliments your features, choosing the styles that speaks to your personal aesthetics has just become easier. If you already have a specific style in mind, use the search bar with key descriptors such as "vintage retro style" or "minimal and sophisticated" to narrow in on your search.

Step 3: Place your order

The hard part is over. You’ve now found your ideal glasses online and you’re ready to place your order. Simply select your color or print of choice, enter your prescription right above the quantity selector, and click the add to cart button.

After your purchase

After your order has arrived, try them on and get comfortable with how they fit. If you have any questions, we are only an email away.

And that’s it. Simple, right? With just 3 easy steps, ordering glasses online is actually a pretty easy process. You’ll just have to figure out what pair of glasses will fit your shape face, both aesthetically and functionally. Ready to shop? Brand Spotlight: Anne et Valentin August 27, 2018 20:52

We love a great love story. Anne et Valentin tells a story of how two people-fated to fall in love-shared a passion for eyewear craftsmanship. Named after its founders, Anne et Valentin is a brand considered to be the pinnacle of French eyewear.

Anne et Valentin began when Valentine obtained his optician’s degree in 1980 and Anne mastered her passion for design. The couple decided to create their brand through a revolutionary process of customizing their eyewear based on the customer’s lifestyle. In order to create the perfect frame, the couple opted to get a better understanding of their customers, assessing how they move, think, what their personalities were like and other particulars. They conducted a survey to learn what aspect of glasses matters most to the wearers. With this in mind, Anne drew some designs and their first collection was launched in 1984, when they named their brand, Anne et Valentin.

Anne incorporated her creative design skills perfectly described as colorful and lively. She also began to design with ergonomics, technical aspects, and customer personalization in mind. The combination of meticulous craftsmanship and unique styling brought their first eyewear collection spectacular results and has continued even until present day.

Made from the best materials available

Anne et Valentin glasses are made from the finest materials available only in Japan and France. Japan is known for its highest quality of Titanium while France produces the best frame materials like acetate and plastic. Anne et Valentin not only focuses on manufacturing high-end designs, but also values supreme quality and durability.

While technology has advanced the eyewear industry, Anne et Valentin has kept its original touch and continues handcrafting their products. Frames are designed and iterated by their skilled artisans, while technicians in France and Japan apply the finishing touches to complete their frames. Their personal approach combined with its artistic designs and the use of top quality materials is what makes Anne et Valentin one-of-a-kind.

Anne et Valentin Designs

A Closer Look at Thierry Lasry August 23, 2018 11:15

The eyewear industry have always been flush with classic and minimal go-to eyewear designs aimed to fit our everyday lives. While there’s no harm with that, the problem arises in the lack of variety especially for those people looking for a range of styles - whether rebellious or over the top futuristic looking glasses. That was the state of the eyewear industry for the longest time, there weren’t many options to choose from until Thierry Lasry hell-bent broke the curse. As the new name in both local and international fashion press, Thierry Lasry, known as the bad boy of eyewear now ranks among the top profile talents in the industry. Let’s take a closer look at the King of trendy eyewear and his brand.

Born and raised in a creative environment, Thierry Lasry's father was an optician (creator of Harry Lary's) and his mother, a designer. Given his background, there is no question why this French designer had lots of insider knowledge and knows best how to fuse fashion and function. He started in the eyewear industry back in 2002 during the relaunch of his dad’s optical line, Harry Lary’s, which he still continues to design today. Thierry Lasry surely loves to take risks and create excitement not only apparent to his close to rockstar persona, but also to his brand’s image when he decided to launch his own brand of sunglasses in 2006.

The Thierry Lasry Brand

Thierry Lasry's eyewear collection is equally brazen as his personality. He launched his brand with the goal to create high-end and futuristic designs making sure the wearer stands out from the crowd. Known for brilliantly achieving the perfect blend of vintage inspiration with a modern, bold, and futuristic touch, he give his retro-inspired masterpieces a unique futuristic twist.

With his “back-to-the-future” motto, Thierry Lasry considered the eighties period as his key source of inspiration. The famous French designer looks back at vintage materials, images, and trends to create new designs and shapes with a unique refined and contemporary modern edge. He considers the eighties as an incredibly creative period where he took inspiration and developed his signature retro-futuristic style and started mixing vintage-inspired designs with modern avant-garde touches.

Thierry Lasry launched his brand not only with the goal of creating purely unique designs with his incredibly creative talent but also with quality in mind. The designer makes sure that all the acetate frames are entirely handcrafted with the best techniques in France and all the sunglasses in his collections are made of acetate that only come from the reputable Italian manufacturer Mazzucchelli.

They say Thierry Lasry glasses are not for the timid.  And definitely, his pirate-inspired series is one example that proves that. He once designed a range of one-lensed glasses like a binge-out eye patch of a pirate but completely embedded with very tiny sparkly Swarovski crystals. That’s how unique and bold his works are. On top of that, Thierry Lasry’s product names are at a different creative level as he considers all of them his babies. He purposely named each model to end in “Y” (Orgasmy, Slutty, Sexxxy, Probably, Aristocracy, Eventually, and Gloomy to name a few ), just like the “Y” in “Thierry” and “Lasry”, his first and last name. Truly, his punkish attitude continues with his absurdly cheeky product names. Now let’s take a closer look at some of his famous designs, Shall we?

Style Icon: Johnny Depp in Glasses August 18, 2018 14:48

Johnny Depp in Glasses Alexander Daas

Johnny Depp is always admired for his versatility and passion as seen through his television appearances and most especially in his iconic movies. Johnny Depp has worked on a number of films, transforming himself to perfectly embody each and every character that he takes. Starting from his groundbreaking role on Tim Buston’s classic TV series 21 Jump Street as Officer Tom Hanson, to Alice in the Wonderland as Mad Hatter, to Captain Jack Sparrow in the box office hit fantasy series Pirates of the Caribbean, to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as Willy Wonka, and list goes on and on. He is not afraid to take on challenging roles and has successfully made a name for himself. Every Johnny Depp movie is always expected to be unique, witty, a risk-taker, and ahead of the curve. He has played funny, mysterious, spooky, and romantic. No wonder why everybody loves him!

Aside from his works and undeniable charisma, what we love the most is the fact that, through all his memorable roles, we have always seen him wearing glasses! Johnny Depp in glasses has been a key look to the characters he played in his movies. His choice for eyeglasses were as bold and risky as his characters were. Here are a few of the many faces of Johnny Depp in glasses.

Johnny Depp in Glasses Alexander Daas

Johnny Depp in Nick of Time

Released in 1995, Johnny Depp wore classic vintage round eyeglasses in the thriller Nick of Time where he played Gene Watson, a widowed accountant facing deadly schemes and races against time to save his daughter. His clear round eyeglasses perfectly accentuated his masculine facial features and helped achieve a nerdy office look for his character.

Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

This all time favorite movie starring Johnny Depp is surely one for the books! He definitely deserved a standing ovation for his crazy antics and brilliant performance. This hilarious movie revolves around a psychopath lawyer Dr. Gonzo and Johnny Depp as an oddball journalist in a pair of classic Ray-Ban RB 3138 Shooter Aviator sunglasses as they take on a crazy level of wackiness while traveling to Las Vegas across the Nevada desert high on drugs (definitely not a movie for the kids!). These unique vintage aviator sunglasses feature a small ring in the center between the lenses for more accurate target shooting, hence the model name Shooter. Now tell me, how many times have you seen someone wear sunglass like these?

Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow is Tim Burton’s American Gothic supernatural movie released in 1999 starring Johnny Depp. This chilling movie is surely  perfect for a Halloween night movie marathon. The story follows Johnny Depp as an unconventional New York police officer named Ichabod Crane as he investigates a series of murders by a mysterious headless horseman in Sleepy Hollow Village. Johnny Depp wearing steampunk eyewear became really famous for its spooky and one-of-a-kind design. This crazy eyewear features clunky spectacles designed to realize director Burton’s eccentric vision to create a 1799 set and regard the functional inventions of that era. Julbo’s 010 Vermont Classic is the closest resemblance of the eyewear to date.

As crazy as the visual set, this movie has won many awards including an Oscar for best in art direction. The famous eyewear was said to contribute to its success as it perfectly represented Johnny Depp’s futuristic character who is geeky, unconventional, and goes against the norm doing everything in his own ways.

Johnny Depp in Glasses Alexander Daas

Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Johnny Depp’s goggle glasses were as famous as this children’s favorite movie itself. Johnny Depp played as an unusual candy maker and chocolate factory owner named Willy Wonka. Fun fact, Johnny admitted his source of inspiration for his Willy Wonka look and surprisingly, it was based on Vogue Magazine editor Ana Wintour. Johnny Depp was absolutely in character with an exaggerated bob cut and over the top round eyeglasses inspired by the Prada sunglasses. These bold and oversized round sunglasses definitely created a signature look which has been considered as one of his craziest eyewear selections amongst his movies to date.

Those are only a few of Johnny Depp’s sunglasses as seen in his movies. A few more of his notable eyewear appearances in movies include Dark Shadows (2007), Public Enemy (2009), The Tourist (2010), Transcendence (2014) and a whole lot more!

Johnny Depp in Glasses Alexander Daas

While Johnny Depp went crazy with his eyewear in his movies, from big white round sunglasses to totally out of this world steam punk binocular inspired glasses, he keeps his eyeglasses in real life classic, simple, and quintessential like his personality. Due to his eye conditions, Johnny Depp has been known to wear eyeglasses and rocks them in public. Johnny Depp is known for his love for round glasses with a keyhole bridge, a detail that gives off a classic vintage vibe with a modern appeal. We always spot him wearing this iconic pair of Lemtosh - roundish tortoise-shell specs from Moscot - on red carpets, magazines, and tabloid covers.

Round glasses like the Lemtosh Moscot are ideal for masculine and more angular face shapes like Johnny Depp’s. The soft round lines of this glasses help balance and smooth out sharp and prominent facial features like the jawline. Johnny Depp and his specs are like a match made in heaven, as this small round framed eyeglass is an accessory as versatile as the actor himself. Whether he’s going for a casual errand to the mall, or even to a fancy event, this pair of eyeglasses could never go wrong with any combination of clothes for both man and woman.

Waking the Sleeping Cat: The Return of the Feline Sunglasses August 18, 2018 08:38

While the inception of the cat-eye-frame fashion happened in the 1960s, the winged out sunglasses are unquestionably soaring back to their former glory. Popular models and artists like Jessica Alba, Gigi Hadid, Katy Perry and Kourtney Kardashian have been paying tribute to the iconic Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn by rocking this riveting style.

If you’re going for a movie-star look but don’t have the energy to go full on extra, you’ve found the sunglasses that will bring out that spotlight-worthy face.

With the playful evolution of the feline sunglasses from a style that was previously restricted to being sported with corrective lenses, to the birth of the tinted cat eye sunglass variety introduced by no other than the film star legend Audrey Hepburn, it is not surprising this trend would be a classic and remain a go-to look for a sophisticated vibe.

Although cat eye sunglasses may pride themselves on their small lens style reducing sun coverage, polarized cat eye sunglasses can help increase the comfort and protection provided by the lenses.

Some of the more popular cat eye frames feature narrow structure for lenses. For those that prefer more coverage, cat eye glasses come in sizes for all face shapes like the Celine cat eye sunglasses.

This dramatic frame by Celine is a glorious throw back to the much in-vogue timeless look of the 60s. This style without question is as on point as the glasses’ edges that join the temple arms with its main frame. The temple tips are thicker, giving this frame presence through a stand-out look, which Celine is known for. Plus, these cat eye sunglasses in acetate plastic take the drama up a notch with mirrored lenses.
